ANATOLIA – ARCHAEOLOGY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

ACTUAL ARCHAELOGY MAGAZINE, which has been pub­lished bimonthly in Turkey with the name “Aktüel Arkeoloji Der­gisi” for five years, aims: firstly, to inform the general public about archaeological investigations, cultural treasures and the heritage of Anatolia; secondly, to share this heritage, which we accept as being of global value, with the whole world. To understand the world’s history, firstly we should explore the entire history of Anatolian civilizations. Beside scientific researches in an interdisciplinary set­ting, recent archaeological excavations and the surveys conducted in Anatolia have been further extending the understanding of the archaeology and the cultural heritage of Anatolia.

We have had just one desire since we published the first issue: to prepare an English version of the issue, and share our work with people who are enthusiastic about world history and to introduce the cultural heritage of Anatolia to people all over the world. We wish to thank the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which has given us encouragement to prepare the English version of Ana­tolian Archaeology Magazine, for their strong support.

We are so glad to take the first step toward the publication of ACTUAL ARCHAEOLOGY MAGAZINE with this issue.

The issue you hold in your hand collects selected articles by ten of the most prominent investigations in Turkey. While the Yenikapi Research conducted in Istanbul carries the Neolithic culture of Is­tanbul to unforeseen and impressive consequences, the Tell Tayinat and Alalakh Excavation Projects have brought to light important data on Anatolian Bronze Age cultures. Zeugma, an ancient city on the Euphrates, has captured national and international attention with its enormous mosaics and wall pictures, and the rescue excava­tions conducted there are also included in this issue. In addition, we understand the marvelous and insightful contributions to the global history of Anatolian civilizations by the ancient cities of Gordion, the capital of Phrygia, and Sardis, the capital of Lydia. You will also find more information about the unique natural, cultural and his­torical heritage of Anatolia in this issue.
