“Penrod was a very mischievous boy who got himself into a series of trou- bles during his rst 12 years. A few incidents (such as the apothecary incident) seemed hard to believe in addition to the fact that he didn’t get punished to suit the circumstances. Some sentences were extremely long. The tale was told in owery style so that much would go over the head of an elementary student. I did not appreciate the racist and sacrilegious phrases. My favorite

part was the birthday party which was quite comical.” Donna Kelley

“My grandfather was a teen during the era of the boyhood adventures found in Penrod and Sam. Perhaps having an appreciation for the stories my grandfather and grandmother told me as a child about their childhood adventures aided my appreciation of Booth Tarkington’s work. The mischief

and humor of Penrod and Sam is wonderful.” Paul Hanrahan
